Use these ‘3 cs’ to help you live a soul-aligned life

It’s not always easy to live the life we were born to live – a.k.a, to live in accordance with our soul.

Most of us are brought up without reference to the soul. Listening to our soul’s guidance can feel like trying to understand a language we don’t know how to speak, written in an alphabet we haven’t been taught.

If we do get in touch with our inner truth, it can feel scary. Our ego – the part of us that helps us to operate day-to-day in the world – just wants to keep us safe. And that means it wants things to stay more or less as they are – even if ‘we’ think we want change!

And even if we are willing to give living a soul-aligned life a go, and we can get in touch with our inner guidance, our mind can still trip us up. We can be overly quick to interpret our inner guidance, or to assume we know what action we need to take to get us on the ‘soul track’.

Basically, it’s easy to still be living from the ego, while genuinely believing we’re following our soul.

Here are three ‘cs’ I’ve found to be an essential part of living soulfully.

1. Creativity

One thing’s for sure, it’s hard to be in contact with your soul when you’re in your normal, everyday ego mind. That looks like: rationalising with the mind, using logic 100% of the time (I’m not dissing logic here, btw – it definitely has a place!), and not making any time or space for soul.

How to use creativity to connect with your soul

The soul speaks in images (which can also be feelings in the body, glimpses, ‘just knowing’ and poetry). If you want to connect with your soul’s guidance on something, try being creative. Imagine what your soul would say if you asked it a question, and write down the answer that comes. Tune into your physical heart – really feel it in your body – then have a conversation with it. Write, draw or feel the answers. Open up to creativity out in nature. Set an intention to receive an answer or guidance from your soul, then go out into nature. Perhaps you’ll get responses in unexpected ways.

2. Curiosity

Staying curious can help us avoid falling into trap of believing we know what a certain image, sign or synchronicity means. When we receive guidance, it’s important to stay with it a bit, and let it reveal itself to you. Remember – your soul isn’t scared or limited, and it holds all of your potential. So give it a chance to help you expand, by remaining curious. Or as I like to think of it: radically open minded.

How to play with curiosity

So instead of immediately trying to figure out what your soul is trying to say, invite the image you’ve received to inhabit your body. Sit as the image. Go for a walk as the image. Be in silence with it, and feel deeply into how IT feels. Cultivating the patience to do this can be deeply rewarding, and illuminating.

3. Courage

So you’ve connected with your soul, and you’ve definitely received some guidance. Now what?

If your soul seems to be asking you to take some kind of action, that can be scary – especially if it feels like that action risks your relationship with certain people, or your financial security.

First up, remember that you always have a choice. You don’t have to act on every piece of guidance immediately. I feel that sometimes, my soul’s guidance comes with time built in for it to marinate and settle. After all, my soul knows me! Remember that your ego is there to help. If taking the soul-aligned action feels right, get your ego on board. Try a negotiation: for example, ‘if I follow what my soul is calling me to do, and leave my job, I promise that if I haven’t found another way to support myself within six months, I will take another job.’

Give your ego time to express its fears, and see if you can allay them by talking to it. But don’t let your ego derail you for ever. Sometimes, you do just need to jump.
